British Values

British Values in Hazel:

We ensure that the fundamental British Values are introduced, discussed and lived out through the ethos and work of Hazel Class. All curriculum areas provide a vehicle for furthering understanding of these concepts. We embrace the concepts with enthusiasm and begin to demonstrate an understanding and begin to apply them to our own lives.

The five British Values are:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

The principle of democracy is reinforced in Hazel Class by choosing a child to represent the class in school parliament.

The rule of law

The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced in Hazel Class.

We are taught the rules and expectations of the school.  We are taught the value and the reasons behind laws that govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.

Individual Liberty

We are actively encouraged to make independent choices, with the knowledge that we are in a safe, secure and supportive environment. Staff in Hazel Class educate and provide boundaries for us to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education.

Mutual Respect

Respect is a strong part of Hazel Class. We learn that our behaviour has an effect on our own rights and those of others.

Mutual respect is embraced throughout the curriculum by providing the opportunity for us to express our views in a safe environment.

Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

This is achieved by our Teachers equipping with the ability to understand our place in a culturally diverse society and by giving the opportunities to experience such diversity within the school community.
