Do you want to be friends?

Cornerstones Topic

This half term we will be learning all about ourselves, our families and what makes us unique.

Our memorable moment will be having a “Guess the Baby” competition! We will ask the children to bring a baby photo to school so that we can try and guess who’s who. From this we will compare what we were like as babies and how we are now.

In our new classroom environments we will be learning new ways of working and organisation. Our teachers will encourage to share, take turns and be kind to each other.

We will be making new friends and learning how to work together in harmony.

We will learning new vocabulary associated with our topic. We will be encouraged to explore the meaning of new words and ask questions about what we are doing, through role play and group discussions.

As our first year in school begins we will learn to hold our pencils correctly, practising forming some recognisable letters.

We are looking forward to beginning our Yoga Bugs adventure, telling stories while using yoga moves, helping us to develop our gross and fine motor skills.

We will talk about the effects of exercise on our bodies and what we need to do to stay healthy.

As we become more independent we will be practising taking off our socks and shoes and putting them back on again. Please don’t worry when we come home with our socks inside out or our jumpers on back to front it means that we have done it ourselves.

We will be exploring familiar traditional tales. We will be learning to write our names using recognisable letters and we will be beginning our Read Write Inc journey, learning new sounds and attempting to blend them together to read simple words.

We will be working with numbers to 20, recognising, ordering, writing and counting sets, and matching to the corresponding numbers. We will begin learning to complete simple addition and subtraction, 1 more, 1 less and doubles to 3.  We will also investigate 2D shapes.

Understanding of the World

In this topic this half term we will be exploring all aspects of ourselves, how we look, how our bodies work and looking at our own family life.

As all small children do, we shall be researching people who help us and how they play an important part in our lives.

In ICT, with the help of Mr Ainsley and Mr Bennison, we shall develop our keyboard and mouse skills, naming parts of a computer, finding and completing our favourite programs. With Mrs Riach and our other reception teachers, we will be spending time practising our phonics and maths using some new apps on the iPads.

Expressive Arts

As the half term progresses, we shall be coming home singing songs about the body from our Autumn repertoire, Mrs Riach and Mrs Usman’s favourite is “Big Red Combine Harvester”.  We are sure that our mummies, daddies, auntie, uncles, grandmas, grandads will also be singing some of our favourites by the time Halloween comes along.

I am sure our teachers love our music exploration as we investigate the sounds musical instruments make and produce our own music. We don’t mean to give them headaches!

We shall use our senses to investigate the environment.

We shall be exploring people who help us through the role play areas; doctor’s surgery, baby clinic, hospital and fire station.

We will have lots of fun experimenting with colour and paint techniques and combine media to produce individual pieces of work. We are so sorry if we come home dirty. Please understand that we haven’t been naughty, we have been learning.
