What happens when I fall asleep?

This half term the children in Reception will be working on the imaginative learning project ‘What happens when I fall asleep?’

We will be exploring such questions as why are there stars in the sky at night?  And does everyone go to bed at the same time as me? We will be looking at bedtime routines, the moon and the stars, nocturnal animals, people who work at night and the importance of sleep and rest.

For our memorable experience we will be introducing the children to the wonders of the Universe by inviting a mobile planetarium in to school.

Explore the meaning of new words and ask questions about what they are doing.

Develop questioning skills through role play and group discussions.


Using a variety of small tools, brushes, pens, pencils the children will develop their fine motor skills. Children will take part in daily ‘squiggle while you wiggle’ sessions.

They will be using the outdoor areas and hall space to develop both fine and gross motor skills, with large and small apparatus. They will talk about the effects of exercise on their bodies and what they need to do to stay healthy.

Reading new stories and re-visiting old favourites such as Whatever next and Funny bones.

Retrieving information from non- fiction books and on the computer about transport, journeys and simple maths.

Beginning to read and write their names.

Reading ordering and writing numbers to 5, to 10, to 20 and beyond.

 Finding one more and one less and using a number line.

Working on doubles to 10 and 20

Looking at the passage of time and using associated language.

Ordering the events in their day including their night time routine.

Understanding The World

Investigating dark and light. Different times of day and routines. 
We will also be learning about people who work at night when we are asleep e.g. Fire officers, police and nurses.

Experiment with different textures and materials to make constellations and rockets. 

How you could help at home

Practice writing letters, names and numbers.

Use the language of time when the opportunity arises: today, tomorrow, yesterday, the days of the week and months of the year. Talk about things that happened yesterday and what might happen tomorrow. What happens on different days of the week.

Share stories together, pointing out pictures and print and naming main characters. Talk about story structure beginning, middle and end.
