Cornerstones Topic

During this topic we will be researching and finding out about different types of rocks, how volcanoes are formed and the children will also be given the opportunity to build their own volcano. We will be researching and finding out about the Pompeii bodies and in art we will recreated these using clay. We will also look at the affects of Earthquakes and the damage that they can cause. Our topic covers lots of Geography, History, Art and Design, Design and Technology, PE, Music and PSHE objectives.

Power of Reading

During the Spring term, we will be reading Mouse, Bird, Snake, Wolf. All of our writing in our English lessons will be based around this text covering a range of genres. We will make predictions about what the book will be about and get to know the characters, settings and plot. We will be developing our writing my using a range of sentence types and richer vocabulary. We will also focus on using the correct punctuation accurately.
Throughout Year 3, we will be continuing our journey to becoming fluent and competent readers. We are all very excited to start reading new books and learning new sounds.


In Maths, we will be continuing to develop our knowledge and understanding of place value as this is at the centre of all our maths work. We will begin the term focusing on measures where we will be looking at different types of measurement, for example, length, weight and height. We will be looking at working in different units of measure. We will then move onto fractions. The children we will focusing recognising fractions, counting up and down in tenths and finally adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator.


We will be learning lots of different songs during the Spring term and we will perform them in assemblies. We can’t wait to use our best singing voices and show everyone what we can do. We will incorporate music into our maths and topic lessons. Some children will also be given the opportunity to learn the ocarina.


In P.E. this term we will be focusing on gymnastics and movements to music.


In Science, we are moving onto a new topic this half term where we will focus on fantastic forces! We will be learning about magnets, how do objects attract and repel each other and classifying everyday objects based on whether they are magnetic or not. We will also build on our scientific enquiry when we investigate ‘’How do objects move on different surfaces?’


In RE, will be focusing on the following three key questions during the Spring term:
How do we decide what is right and wrong? What do religions say about right and wrong (emphasis on Christianity and Islam)?
What happens on Chinese New Year’s Day and why?
What happened to Jesus each day during Holy Week (Palm Sunday to Good Friday)?


Year 3 will continue with Scratch in Spring 1. They will be developing a game that will apply all their previous learning. This will give them the opportunity to start to develop ideas for their own games.
