Tribal Tales

Cornerstones Topic

During this topic we will be researching and finding out about the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. We will also find out about what it was like to live in the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age.  We will be investigating what it is like to become an archaeologist and creating stone and bone tools from across the Stone Age. In our science, we will be planting a range of grain crops that Bronze Age farmers would have grown and what foods they would have made using them. Our topic covers lots of Geography, History, Art and Design, Design and Technology, PE, Music and PSHE objectives.

Power of Reading

During the Autumn term, we will be reading “Lila and the Secret of Rain”. All of our writing in our English lessons will be based around this text covering a range of genres. We will make predictions about what each book will be about and get to know the characters, settings and plot. We will be developing our writing my using a range of sentence types and richer vocabulary. We will also focus on using the correct punctuation accurately.

Mathematics

In Maths, we will be looking at place value and addition/subtraction. We will be using numbers up to 1000, recognising the value of each digit in a three digit number and ordering and comparing these numbers. We will then move on to adding and subtracting mentally and using formal written methods.

Music

We will be learning lots of different songs during the Autumn term and we will perform them in assemblies. We can’t wait to use our best singing voices and show everyone what we can do. We will incorporate music into our maths and topic lessons.

P.E.

In PE we will be implementing weekly lessons focusing on multi skills including throwing and catching. Children will be provided with PE kits but if you could ensure your child has appropriate foot wear that would be great.

Science

In Science, we are extending our current knowledge about plants. We will be learning about leaves, roots, water transportation, new plants and what flowers have in common. We will also build on our scientific inquiry when we investigate ‘Why trees are tall?’ and ‘Do plants have legs or not?’

R.E.

In RE, will be focusing on the following three key questions during the Autumn term:

What is God like and how does believing in God influence people’s lives? (Emphasis on Christianity and Islam.)

Why do believers often see life as a journey and what significant events mark this journey?

What is Advent and what happens during this season?

Computing

All areas of learning will be enhanced using computing as children have regular access to iPads to learn new skills and research their topic. In computer science we will be looking at a range of programs – Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint as well as working with lego to enhance our learning.
