Our first year 5 topic is “Off with her head!” Within this topic, we will learn about the Tudor dynasty and what Henry VIII did to his many wives. We will cover lots of Geography, History, Art & Design, PE, Music and PSHE objectives.
Off with her head!
Power of Reading
During the Autumn term, we will be reading “My Friend Walter” by Michael Morpurgo. The writing we produce throughout the weeks will be topic related. Ensuring that all of our writing is cross curricular will help us to get to know the Tudors even better and the main characters from our Power of Reading text. Within our English lessons, we will be writing a persuasive letter, newspaper report and a narrative story to name but a few activities!
In Maths, we will be looking at place value and the basic skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. During the Autumn half term, we will be ensuring we know the place value of numbers up to 6 digits making sure we can read and write them accurately. Learning our Times Tables is crucial if we are going to make great progress in all our Maths this year.
We will be working on Cyclic patterns exploring rhythm and pulse with AFRICAN DRUMS.
We will be learning lots of different songs during the Autumn term and we will perform them in assemblies. We will listen to the song ‘Greensleeves’ which is often connected to Henry VIII. We will also use Tudor music to dance along to.
During this year we will have dedicated PE sessions with Mr Corcoran. We will be developing striking and fielding and team games. We will also be able to enjoy extra sessions of Dance linking to our topic. I wonder if we can learn to dance like the Tudors?
In Science we will be looking at the topic of space. We will learn about the planets, moons and the galaxies around us, looking at the forces that keep the planets in the correct places.
In RE, will be focusing on the following key questions during the Autumn term:
What is God like and how does believing in God influence people’s lives (emphasis on Hinduism and Sikhism)?
Linked to our Science Space topic and Music, we will be designing Space buggies in LEGO and programming them to move to the Music of Gustav Holst “The planet suite”.
All of the year 5 pupils will have the opportunity to learn to play the recorder. They will be practising weekly and starting to read music.
