Princes, Peasants and Pestilence

Cornerstones Topic

Our Summer year 5 topic is; Princes, Peasants and Pestilence within this topic we will learn about the spread of the horrible plague and the devastation it caused across the world and how people coped. As well as this aspect we will cover lots of Geography, History, Art & Design, PE, Music and PSHE objectives.

Power of Reading

During the Summer term, we will be reading ‘Kiss of Death’. The writing we produce throughout the weeks will be topic related. Ensuring that all of our writing is cross curricular will help us to get to know the times of the Plague even better and the main characters from our Power of Reading text. Within our English lessons we will be writing a persuasive letter, discursive argument and an explanation text to name but a few activities!
Daily reading sessions will focus on comprehension, inference and deduction. They will have the opportunity to read a variety of material such as newspapers, fiction, poetry and non-fiction.

In Maths, we will be looking at Geometry such as Angles and properties of Shape. We will be practising our fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills using ‘Talking Maths’ to develop our understanding. Then finishing off the term with position and direction with translation and reflection.
The children will continue to develop their arithmetic skills with CLIC and 5 a day. This will develop addition, subtraction, multiplication and division methods and application of fractions skills.
Learning our Times Tables is crucial if we are going to make great progress in all our Maths this year.

All the children in Y5 will continue to have the opportunity to play the recorder. They will be learning to read simple musical notes and play in a group. They will also enjoy learning new topic related songs and be able to perform them to the whole school.

In the Summer term in PE we will be focussing on athletics ready for Sports days.

In Science, we will be looking at the topic of Living Things and their life cycles and habitats. We will be planning and carrying out investigations applying Maths skills. We will also be looking at the changes of humans from child to adult hood.
We will also enjoying STEM week and carrying out investigations with FORCES. We will be asking the question- How can we carry an egg safely to the ground?
