Towers, Tunnels and Turrets

Cornerstones Topic

In the Spring term we will begin our Towers, Tunnels and Turrets topic. We will go back in time and look at castles, what it was like to live in one and why they were important. We will look at amazing structures from around the world and label them on maps. We will also look at famous bridges around the world and closer to home. Our focus will be on both the Transporter Bridge and Newport Bridge.

Power of Reading

This term, as part of our Cornerstones topic, we will be looking at a variety of traditional and fairy tales. We will look at the story of Rapunzel, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Sleeping Beauty and the Three Little Pigs. Using these stories, we will look at narrative writing and character/setting description. This will allow us to continue working on our sentence structure and vocabulary work. We will also look at writing letters in role.

This year we will continue to work on our reading skills. This term we will be looking at a variety of different texts to help us develop our reading and comprehension skills. In our English lessons we will also be including more reading comprehension sessions. Some of us will also be continuing with our RWI programme. Reading homework will be set each week using the Cracking Comprehension help.

In Maths, we will revisit the four operations and also look at measures in more detail. We will continue working on our problem solving and reasoning skills. To support us in our learning we will be using a variety of tools and apparatus such as dienes and Numicon tiles.

This term we will be learning more new songs and practising them each week in preparation for our performances to our peers. We will also look at using different percussion instruments to keep a beat and play along to different music.

This half term we will be looking at team games and we will be brushing up o our hockey skills. As part of this unit we will be practising dribbling, passing and defending. We will also take part in hockey games. As some of our sessions may be outside you will need to bring suitable footwear and you could bring some tracksuit bottoms.

Our topic this half term will be Materials. This topic will link closely to our Towers, Tunnels and Turrets, Cornerstones topic. We will look at materials and their different properties. We will look at the suitability of different materials to help build castles and bridges.

In RE we will be focussing on worship and how people from different religions worship. We will also celebrate Chinese New Year this term. We will dedicate a whole afternoon to learning all about the traditions associated with Chinese New Year.

Our focus this term will be Mindstorms using sensors. We will use block code to control the robots to complete given tasks.  This introduces them to more complex algorithms. We are going to introduce multiple sessions to our programmes and apply this understanding to more complex problems.
