Cornerstones Topic

Grab your wetsuit! This term we’re going deep into an underwater world of incredible coral and mysterious sea creatures. In this topic we will be heading to a local aquarium and will learn about life in the ocean. We will look at our favourite sea animals before creating sculptures out of clay. Next, we will be delving in to the history of the HMS Challenger and the history of submarines. Our topic covers lots of Geography, History, Art & Design, PE, Music and PSHE objectives.

Power of Reading

During the this term, we will be reading “Oliver and the Seawigs”. All of our writing will be topic related and we are so excited to predict what each book will be about and get to know the characters, setting and plot. We will cover a variety of different genres all linked to this book.


In Maths, we will be looking at place value, fractions, decimals and statistics. We will use a variety of different strategies and resources to ensure we are confident in these areas. 


We will be learning lots of different songs during the Autumn term and we will perform them in assemblies. We can’t wait to use our best singing voices and show everyone what we can do. We will incorporate music into our maths and topic lessons.


In PE this term, the children will be taught Netball. The focus will be on throwing and catching skills, strategies and techniques. The children will also be taught about how they can live a healthy active lifestyle. They will take part in circuit training and will be encouraged to achieve their personal best in sport.


In Science, we look at answering questions such as ‘Are all sea creatures the same?’ We will answer these questions by using the plan, do, review approach. We will also look at the impact humans have on the Earth and finish up looking at animals.


In RE, will be focusing on the following three key questions during Autumn term:

Q1: How do families practise their faith and how does their faith influence their lives?(Emphasis on Islam and Sikhism.)

Q2:  How and why do religious people celebrate religious festivals? (Emphasis on Divali.)


Q3:  How is Christmas celebrated in different parts of the world?


The children will have regular access to both the ICT suite and the Lego suite where they will continue to learn how to use computer programs, equipment such as data loggers and how technology impacts on the lives of people.
