Year 5 (Rowan, Hawthorn, Hickory & Juniper)


Year 5 will be using the book ‘Girl of Ink and Stars’ by Kirran Milwood Hargrave to help support us in our writing this half term. We will be writing a diary entry in role as one of the characters and some narrative, including dialogue, based on this text.

In reading, we are exploring the text ‘1001 Arabian Nights’.


We will start this half term looking at multiplication and division. In this topic, we will be using formal written methods to multiply 4 digit numbers by 1 and 2 digit numbers.

We will then move on to fractions, where we will compare and order fractions, look at improper fractions and equivalent fractions.

We will continue to work on our times tables daily and we will use ‘Times Tables Rockstars’ to help us with this.


This half tern in science we will be looking at forces. As part of this topic, we will be revisiting contact forces before moving on to look at air resistance, water resistance and friction. We will also be looking at the effects that gravity has on objects.


This term our topic question is Why should we know Gertrude Bell? Were there others like her?’ As part of this topic, we will be learning all about Gertrude Bell and her journeys around the world. In art, we will be creating print designs, using Islamic patterns for inspiration. In geography, we will be using maps and atlases to help us to plot journeys from one country to another. As part of our history lessons, we will be creating timelines and looking at historical events that have shaped the nation of Baghdad.

Religious Eduction

In RE this half term, we will be looking at Sikhism and learning about Sikh views on the difference between right and wrong. We will also look at the festival Chinese New Year.

 What can your child do at home?

  • Please allow your child the opportunity to read to you at home. They should be reading 3 times per week. 
  • Encourage your child to complete their weekly ‘My Maths’ homework. 
  • Children should be encouraged to practise their spellings each day to support them with their weekly spelling test.
  • Support your children in practising their times tables. Children should be able to recall all times tables up to 12 x 12.
