Year 5/6 Language Hub

Meet the Teacher

Meet the Teaching Assistants

We are a hard-working, multilingual class who learn new things every day. We love to laugh and makes jokes. We are the very good at welcoming new children in to our class and learning new life skills by baking/ cooking on a Friday.  We love to play and learn new languages.  The language hub has been designed to help support children who come to Ayresome with little to no English. The children are taught a bespoke curriculum that is designed to help them access the main stream classes as they move through school.

Our class motto is: Have a go!

We started the year with an exciting topic all about us.  As part of this topic we learnt a lot of new vocabulary in English to describe ourselves, the school, our house and places around Middlesbrough. We read a book called Town is by the sea and loved learning about mining. In November we spent a week Celebrating Diwali. We made Diva lamps and ate traditional Indian food. We then moved on to looking at rivers and the River Tees before celebrating Christmas around the world by learning about different cultural traditions.

This half term we have studied the Ancient Greeks. We enjoyed reading about Medusa and how brave Perseus defeated her. This half term we will be looking at a Topic called Our world. In this topic we will be developing our Geography skills as we learn all about maps and how to read them to find the countries that the children in our class have come from.

We love Maths and have learnt so much this year about place value and the 4 operations.

5 a day and Times tables are an essential part of our daily Maths.

The summer term will see us moving onto fractions. We are ready to learn about equivalent fractions, fractions of amounts, improper and mixed, as well as adding, subtracting and multiplying two fractions together. We will then move onto measures and conversions.

Spring 1 saw us working from home. It was a strange time but we engaged with online lessons and seesaw work brilliantly. We also did online lessons in small groups. We will continue to work on sentence structure this half term by retelling the story ‘The Journey’.

We really enjoy Science and earlier in the year we looked at plants and how they grow. We have started work in out garden and hope to apply our knowledge when we plant seeds. In Summer 1 we plan to learn about electricity and understand how to make bulbs brighter and use complete circuits.

During Lockdown Miss Lavelle became an online scientist and had lots of fun teaching the year group! Our favourites were:

1. Dunking biscuits!
2. Water fun! We explored water tension, where we tried to float a needle as well as showing how important it was to wash our hands using soap and pepper!
3. Optical illusions.

PE is one of our favourite subjects! We have PE  each week, we are learning about and practising different athletic sports. To keep us fit, we have been enjoy jogging a mile each day through our green space AND we are become amazing skippers as the whole school works towards being fit and healthy.

As well as all of this, we enjoyed experiences with Wilderness Outdoor Education – we can’t wait for them to come back to school in the Summer Term.

To finish off our year, we are going to learn some great life skills through a topic that will see us plan, shop and cook for an event in Summer 2. In Science we will be learning all about the body by studying animals including humans.

In our class we are very lucky to have Ms Singh working with us. She takes groups of children and delivers an intervention called Learning Village. This is for the children who are brand new to the English language and have need the very basic survival language. This ensure that all children have the language to communicate their needs with their peers or with members of staff.

We hope you have enjoyed finding out about us!

We’re always up to something exciting so make sure you follow Ayresome’s Twitter and Facebook!
